Going for a HIKE!?!?

There is nothing I hate worse then boring exercise!
I like to exercise. Now getting up really early to do just that. I am not a fan of. I guess it is a good thing I don't have to.

But whether it be early morning or mid afternoon. The hardest part is making the decision to do it.
As soon as you change your clothes and put on your shoes you should be ready to go.. At least I am!

I have everything I need to have a good workout. I even have a room devoted to it.
I have a Total Gym which I don't and never have used, treadmill, and also some free weights and some other things like shake bars. So I got it all. I got the stuff for working my muscles and for cardio.
Still I am looking for something even different..
I have ALWAYS wanted to be a runner. But it is just not for me. I have many hip, knee and ankle issues that would only be aggravated by running. I am not saying never. Just not right now at this weight.

The next best thing. Hiking!!!
I am not talking about a leisurely stroll..I am talking about actually hiking.
I know better then to start off doing something that I am not conditioned to do. So I will start off slow.
But I have a goal..I have a lot of goals and this one would be to not be huffing and puffing after climbing a small hill.

I have always wanted to be really healthy and be a semi athlete. I even have a book that I bought a few years ago that has a bunch of hiking areas in Arizona. I need to dig that out.
I am not even sure if I ever read it.

Being over weight can really hold you back in a lot of ways and I don't think that people realize that.
Especially if they have never been over weight.
Just from losing 20 pounds my body has changed so much. My outlook on life has also changed a lot.
So it really makes me wonder how I will feel when I have lost another 40 LBS?

  1. Hiking sounds fun! I've been wanting to go hiking in a local park here in the winter time. It's so pretty out there!

  2. Oh yes, one of my goals is to not huff and puff after climbing small hills too. :) I think hiking is a great form of exercise, because it works so many areas of your body. You'll be hiking up a storm before you know it. :)

  4. Four peaks!! It would be a good drive, but it is a great hike! And if you are feeling nerdy you can even look for the "Lost Dutchmen's gold" lol!! :)

  5. I love to go hiking! I'm glad you are getting out there doing something fun, you love. I get bored with the gym and the same old routine. I can't wait for the weather to get better so I can be outside exercising. Keep at it girl!

  7. You will feel amazing, of course. Hiking is wonderful, I used to do it all the time when I was in shape. My best friend and I would often just pack up some water and granola bars and head out for nowhere in particular. Where I grew up there were mountains literally within a stone's throw of both the front and back porch so we would just pick one on any given day and go for it. Sometimes we could find a trail, sometimes we would make one, sometimes we found ourselves free-climbing the last 50 feet or so of rock faces that top all of our mesa's and buttes here in the southwest.

I was also 5 miles from Zion so we did a lot of hikes up Angel's Landing, Weeping Rock, The Emerald Pools, and our all-time favorite was a 9.1 mile back country hike that required a special pass and a signed disclaimer just to do called "The Subway". We did that one so many times we created a website to guide other hikers and prepare them for the trip. http://www.angelfire.com/ut2/subway/

Hiking is a great activity, you're smart not to aim for everest in the beginning but you can most definitely get there with enough determination and training. If you want, when we're both up to par, we could make plans to do the Subway together.

  8. Hiking is absolutely amazing!! I love hiking in the winter - and what is good is that we can all do it at our own pace! Sometimes I enjoy a nice brisk walk around the property, othertimes I enjoy a slow hike through the woods! Good for YOU! The more you do it, the more you'll love it!
